About Cryptogram

Cryptogram is for people who love logic and a good quote. Every letter of a phrase is replaced by a number, and the same letter always gets the same number. Your task is to restore the original text.

Every quote is signed by its real author: writers, scientists, philosophers and movie characters. A solved puzzle often turns into a small discovery.

How to play

  1. Some letters are already revealed, and numbers stand in for the rest.
  2. Select an empty cell and type a letter on the on-screen keyboard. The same number always means the same letter.
  3. Start with numbers you already know. Solved letters are highlighted on the keyboard.
  4. After three mistakes the keyboard locks for a short while, so take your time.
  5. A hint reveals the letter in the selected cell.

Tips from Brocco

  • Short words are the best key to the cipher. One-letter words are almost always "a" or "I".
  • Look for repeated numbers at the end of words. They are often endings like "-ing", "-ed" or "-s".
  • Check the author: the name sometimes hints at what the quote is about.

Cryptogram FAQ

What is a cryptogram?

It is a text where each letter has been replaced by a number or symbol. You solve it with logic: short words and repeated patterns let you restore the whole phrase step by step.

How is a cryptogram different from a crossword?

In a crossword you guess words from clues. In a cryptogram you decode a whole phrase from letter patterns. Crosswords test knowledge, cryptograms test logic and attention.

What happens if I make a mistake?

After three mistakes the keyboard locks for a short while. Wait a moment and carry on.

Do I need to sign up?
